Meet Chester

Chester, the raccoon, is a character from the book The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn that I read to the children on the first day of school. The children will do a simple follow up activity that will be sent home. Eventually, we will do some center activities involving this story. As a result, the children tend to become attached to him. Chester sits on my lap when I am reading a book to the class and "joins" us in during morning and class meetings. As the year progresses, the children enjoy reading to him also.

This year, I have joined a traveling mascot program that will involve 4 other classrooms in the country. He will be mailed on October 15th. For more information regarding this project, go to my internet projects page.  We will miss him while he is gone!

Here are some sites that I have found that contain units for the book , The Kissing Hand:

Even though my students enjoy our stuffed mascot and find him cute, it will be necessary for me to read about what a real raccoon is like.  I will determine what their previous knowledge (schema) is before creating a short report together using “Kidwriting”.
