Spelling

I will start spelling the week of September 12th. I will choose 10 words from our Kindergarten sight word list. The Kindergarten list of 25 words from last year is actually part of the total First grade list of 130 words. Your child is expected to spell these words correctly in their writing as this ability is assessed as part of their grade level writing. By the end of the school year, your child would have been tested on the spelling of these words, as well as word family and some content area (challenge) words.

I will send home letter cards for your child to make the words using "Build it, mix it, fix it, check it, and write it". We have been using this method in the classroom. Some children will take longer to be expert at it. Your child needs to write the spelling words 3 times each after making it with the letters. This spelling paper is taken home in the blue homework folder every Monday through Thursday which will be part of our BEAR Notebooks.

A letter explaining this will be sent home in the first week of school. I will attach a white envelope with your child's name on it. Please keep the letter cards in the envelope in the correct page of the BEAR Notebook so that your child can find them every day.
