Primary Literacy Standards for First grade

To be on grade level for the November report card, your child's writing must meet all of the following:

- uses varied sentence openers

- the message or idea of the writing piece is clear to both reader and writer

- contain 2 or more ideas about a topic

- know the directional pattern for writing: starts at the top left, moves left to right, and returns down left

- have spaces between words

- use inventive spelling (beginning, middle, and ending sounds)

- have all Kindergarten high frequency words and many Grade 1 words are spelled correctly

- the writer revises, edits, and proofreads appropriately

 

To be on grade level for the March report card, your child's writing must meet all of the following:

- writes in an obvious organizational structure: narrative, informational, or procedural

- the message or idea of the written piece is clear to the reader

- contains 3 or more ideas about a topic

- contains a closing sentence

- in addition to inventive spelling, word wall words are spelled correctly

- ending punctuation and capital letters are used correctly some of the time

- shows the directional pattern for writing: starts at the top left, moves left to right, and returns down left

- has spaces between words

 

To be on grade level for the June report card, your child's writing must meet all the following:

- writing has an obvious organizational structure

- writes for multiple purposes: narrative, informational, procedural

- main idea is presented and supported

- writing has a beginning, middle, and end

- sentence structures reflect patterns typical of spoken language

- ending punctuation and capital letters are used correctly most of the time

- correct spelling of kindergarten and first grade high frequency words

- begins to move to conventional spelling (editing)
