To be on grade level, your child's writing must meet all of the following:
- writing demonstrates an obvious organizational structure
- writes for multiple purposes: narrative (personal) and procedural (1st trimester), narrative and response to literary text (2nd trimester), and informational (report) and response to informational text (3rd trimester)
- the writer uses the writing processes of prewriting, drafting, revision, editing, and critiquing appropriately to produce final drafts
- uses varied beginnings and ending
- writing stays on topic and contains more than 3 details(ideas) about that topic
- main idea is presented and supported (informational)
- applies the directional pattern for writing: starts at the top left, moves left to right, and returns down left
- have spaces between words
- uses conventional spelling (all Kindergarten, Grade 1, and current Grade 2 word wall words spelled correctly)
- applies word families and phonics patterns taught and uses phonetic spelling (beginning, middle, and ending sounds) for other words
