Here you will find copies of previously sent emails.

To search for a particular topic, hold down the "Ctrl" button and "F" on your keyboard, and type in a word to search for.

Topic/Message

Sometimes when you receive emails you will notice a paper clip icon. This means that the sender has attached a file to the email.

How to open attachments in WebAccess (www.psdri.net  and click on Email):

Click on the subject of the e-mail to open it.

To the right of the attachment’s name you will see [view] [open] and [save as].

Click on [save as].

A pop-up file download window will ask you, "What do you want to do with this file?".  (Your choices are [open] [save] or [cancel].) Choose [save].

A similar window will pop up again. This time choose where you want to save the file where it says "save in:" (If you are at school/admin, you should choose your home directory.)

Click SAVE in the bottom right-hand corner.

DONE!

OR

How to open attachments in GroupWise Client (from school/admin only, under Teacher Tools at school, under GroupWise at Admin)

Click on the subject of the e-mail to open it.

You will see the attachments at the bottom of the email.

Right-click on the attachment, and choose [save as].

A window will pop up again. Choose where you want to save the file where it says "save in:" (If you are at school/admin, you should choose your home directory.)

Click SAVE in the bottom right-hand corner.

DONE!

Now you can go to your home directory (or wherever you saved it) and double-click the file to open it, just like any other file. OR If you are in an application, like Word, you can go to FILE >OPEN as usual as well.

Now that you know how to do this, practice with this email. I am attaching directions for attaching files to emails that you send, along with these instructions for opening/saving attachments.

I am attaching a file to it for you to practice. If you would like to practice, try sending an email to yourself (type your own email address where it says “To:”)

*Remember, viruses can be sent as attachments, so don’t open/save an attachment unless you know who is sending it!

You may have noticed the link on Pawtucket School Department's homepage that says Directory.

This is a directory of employees. If you search for your own information and find it is incorrect, you can edit it yourself. Simply click "Login" at the top and then login with your username and password. Click "Edit Information" at the top, make the changes, and then click "Save" at the bottom of the page.

Don't forget to Logout when you are done.

Once you are logged into a network computer, you will probably notice a few different icons. You should see your "Home Directory", which is your password-protected space on the network for saving files. Nobody can access this folder without your password.

Depending on your location, you may also see "Shared" folders, such as "Shared Teacher" or "Shared Special Ed", etc. You can access the files in these shared folders, but they will open as "read-only". This means that you cannot save over them or delete them, since they are there for the whole group to use. So, if you want to type into a Word or Excel document that is there, simply open it, go to FILE, SAVE AS and choose your Home Directory (Drive H: you'll see your last name, first initial). Once it is saved there, you can do anything you would like to do.
We often get questions about what to do with computers in classrooms and offices over the summer weeks. Here are the answers:

  • Leave your computer(s) plugged in, but turned off.
  • Check that both the monitor and CPU (the "computer" itself) are turned off.
  • Feel free to cover them with light fabric or computer covers.
  • Do not pile anything on top of the computers, monitors or keyboards.
Other important information:
  • Remember that you have access to your email all summer long. From home just go to www.psdri.net and click on Email.
  • If you have a PDA that you won't be using over the summer, keep it charged or else you will lose all of your information.
  • No computers are to be moved, except by the Computer Department. If you have a request for a move, contact your building Technology Coach who can enter it as a Trouble Ticket.
Do you want to know if someone with a psdri.net email address has opened your email? This is easy!
  1. Login to your email account.
  2. Go to your "Sent" email folder and open the email you are wondering about.
  3. Click on the tab called "Properties". You will see the exact date and time it was delivered and/or opened!*
(*The only time this will not be accurate is if the recipient is accessing their psdri.net email through another program, like Outlook.)
Are you having a problem with your computer? We want to help!

With 1900+ computers in the Pawtucket School Department, it is a monumental task to keep everything running smoothly with a small computer department staff.

To best report and take care of problems, we have the following protocols set up:

Schools:
  1. Give details of the problem to your building Technology Coach (be sure to include room number, blue tag number on machine, software title, exact problem, etc.)
  2. He/She will type it into our "Trouble Ticket" database online which automatically records the date the problem was reported
  3. Someone from the computer department will address the problem as soon as possible, sometimes by emailing you or the Technology Coach with instructions, or by visiting the school
School Offices & Administration Building: Call the Computer Department at ext.358 (be sure to give details about the software you are using, the exact problem, error, etc.)

Please, don't assume we know about a problem with software, machines, etc. We can't fix things that we don't know about, and we really want things to be working for you.
Are you seeing this e-mail as blue type on a yellow background?

Do this:
-Click on "Tools" in the top toolbar
-Choose "Options..."
-Double-click "Environment"
-Click on the "Views" tab
-At the bottom you will see "Default Compose View" and "Default Read View"
-Change both of these to "HTML" instead of "Plain Text"
-Click OK, then CLOSE
Are you looking to integrate Technology into your classroom?

Here are a few grant opportunities that individuals can pursue:

  • "Jordan Fundamentals" for teachers of Grades K-12
Information: Requirements and application can be printed from: http://www.nike.com/nikebiz/nikebiz.jhtml?page=26&item=jordan
  • "Best Buy"
Information: We passed on this information to school Technology Coaches in August, and Donna Sawyer, Gr. 3 at Winters was awarded $2500! She contacted us and ended up with two great wireless laptops for her students!) This grant will run again in April 2005.
  • Literacy Classroom Initiative - Teachers of Grades K-3 (possibly 4)
Information: This is the "mClass" grant that RIDE ran over the past 2 summers to purchase computers and Palm pilots. Teachers interested in participating this coming summer should email us by replying to this message. We will be sending notices to school principals shortly.
Remember! Grants are a great resource, but they need to comply with what what is happening in the school district. Be sure to check with the appropriate people -- superintendents, administrators, coordinators, business office, etc -- before jumping in.

Try this shortcut: Instead of clicking "Back" with your mouse, just hit the backspace button on your keyboard.
Are you interested in experimenting with "Inspiration" or "Kidspiration (K-3)" at home? We purchased this graphic organizer software for the district, and it came with the rights to allow teachers to install it for use at home.
The technology coach in your building has copies of the disks and the serial numbers for you to sign out.
Are you looking to have your personal laptop set up to access the Internet at school? Fill out the proper form and submit it! You'll find the form on the "Forms & Instructions" page of our Web Site.

"Tech Tips" is a series of emails sent to all employees of the Pawtucket School Department to keep them informed and share answers to frequently asked questions. This series of emails is in response to teachers' requests for such information.

Please feel free to email us with an area/question you would like addressed in future emails.
