HELLO EVERYONE!!

Our school has been receiving some very good publicity regarding our test scores. On Wednesday, April 23rd, several students, Mr. LaBranche, and I were invited to provide a presentation on best practices in education at JMW at the Rhode Island Urban Education Symposium held at the Hotel Providence. Our students participated in conversations revolving around leadership and instruction. We were proud to be highlighted at such a well attended event.
We are also very pleased to announce that Congressman Patrick Kennedy visited JMW on Monday, April 28, 2008 to present the school a Federal Omnibus Appropriations Grant in the amount of $ 292,000.00. The funds will allow us to purchase state of the art equipment and supplies for the school. The grant will also help us to initiate an after school arts program for our students in the lower grades in Pawtucket.

Here are the important dates for the month:

Our next PTO/SIT meeting will be held on Tuesday, May 6, 2008 at 6:30 pm here at JMW. Many parents signed up and I hope we have a large turnout. We will also hold our School Improvement Meeting immediately following the PTO meeting.

JMW SEMI-FORMAL

We are planning a Semi-Formal for Friday, May 30, 2008 at Corrine's (formerly Bobby's Banquet Hall). A special thanks to our wonderful PTO for their help and support.

SCIENCE NECAP ASSESSMENTS

THE RHODE ISLAND STATE ASSESSEMENTS IN SCIENCE WILL BE ADMINISTERED TO ALL GRADE 11 STUDENTS ON MAY 13, 14, AND 15. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT ALL STUDENTS BE IN ATTENDANCE AND ON TIME ON THOSE DAYS.

MEMORIAL DAY

THERE WILL BE NO SCHOOL ON MONDAY, MAY 26, 2008 TO CELEBRATE MEMORIAL DAY.

All students in the Rhode Island public schools must submit a portfolio for graduation with work they have completed. Some of these are called "common tasks". All of their submissions are compared and scored by a rubric and then entered electronically through their four years of high school. The Portfolio Based Graduation Requirements are mandatory for all Rhode Island high school students to graduate.

Thanks and have a great month!!!
