ACTION PLAN:  4  STUDENT LEARNING and HOME-SCHOOL CONNECTION   

                                                Needs Statement: 42% of Potter Burns students did not meet proficiency on the 2007 NECAP

                                                Reading Assessment and 54% did not meet proficiency on the 2007 NECAP Math Assessment.

Target:  Increase the percentage of students who meet or exceed proficiency on local and state assessments by 3% in all grade levels. Decrease the number of students tardy to school by 10%.

Result Statement:  Students will be confident, respectful, responsible learners who attend school regularly, on time, ready to learn.

Changes in student learning behavior:

Students will:

·         Attend school regularly and arrive on time

Come to school prepared to learn
Follow and demonstrate expected academic and social behaviors in all areas of the school
Put forth their best effort in academics and behavior
Respect themselves and others
Take ownership of their behavior and accept appropriate consequences
Persist in their work and strive to improve
Work cooperatively to solve problems, both academic and social
Share school-wide expectations for academics and behavior with their families
Confidently ask questions to clarify learning
Be willing to take risks and make mistakes

Changing Instruction: 

Teachers will:

Clearly communicate expectations for attendance, behavior and learning
Use  consistent plans to hold students accountable for their learning and social behaviors both within and outside the classrooms
Provide opportunities for students to self-correct and improve their work
Set clear expectations and provide opportunities for students to work cooperatively
Provide an environment where students are comfortable to take risks and ask questions
Communicate with parents expectations for student learning and behavior
Provide “at risk” students with behavior modification plans and/or repeated opportunities to be successful

Monitoring Progress with timelines and adjustments:

 

At the end of each trimester:

The SIT, Principal, and  teachers will:

 

Analyze attendance, tardiness records and behavior referrals

 

Review student work and reflect on progress, adjusting instruction as necessary.

 

Use findings from NECAP testing, classroom assessments, student work and teacher observations to monitor progress.

 

Use Mid-Trimester reports to:

 

Communicate student progress, behavior and attendance with parents 

 

 

Monitor the progress of “at risk” students towards benchmarks

 

 

Collaboration and Support: 

 

During Faculty Meetings, Professional Days, Grade Level Meetings and release times,  teachers will:

 

Develop a school-wide behavior plan consistent with school and district expectations for learning and behavior

 

Create a school handbook/pamphlet for parents

 

Update home/school compact to distribute with trimester report cards

 

Review student work and teacher lessons to reflect action steps for students and teachers

 

Collaborate to share research-based academic and behavior practices and strategies that support the “at risk” students.

 

 

Principal will meet with every grade level each trimester to review student work and student progress.

Resources, School and District: 

 

Use Federal, State and Local funds as appropriate to:

 

Provide professional development in areas of managing behavior 

 

Provide release time for teachers to review   school-wide behavior plan and its impact on student work

 

Provide time to analyze attendance, tardiness records and behavior referrals

Evaluation of Success/Reporting to Families and Community:

 

The SIT, Principal, and teachers will analyze student success based on findings from:

 

An increase of 3% in the number of students meeting or exceeding proficiency on the Math, Reading and Writing NECAP.

 

A 10% decrease in the number of tardy students and behavior referrals.

 

Analysis of SALT survey data will show an increased positive attitude towards school

 

A 3% increase in the number of “at risk” students meeting proficiency
