POTTER-BURNS SCHOOLWIDE IMPROVEMENT PLAN 2008

ACTION PLAN:  3  MATH  Goal              Needs Statement: 58% of Potter Burns students did not meet proficiency on the

                                                                       2007 NECAP Math Assessment in Geometry and Measurement.

Target:  Increase the percentage of students who meet or exceed proficiency on local and state assessments by 3% in all grade levels.

Result Statement:  Students will improve math skills in all areas.  Students will demonstrate proficiency in geometry and measurement. 

Changes in student learning behavior:

Students will:

 

Demonstrate an understanding of the properties and attributes of polygons and angles by sorting, classifying, drawing and measuring.

 

Demonstrate a conceptual understanding of congruency and reasoning in geometric context.

 

Demonstrate an understanding of analog, digital and elapsed time.

 

Use a variety of measuring tools to demonstrate a conceptual understanding of perimeter, area and capacity.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Changing Instruction:  Teachers will:

 

Create and  implement lessons plans that are aligned to the GLE’s and district research based curriculum.

 

Model, teach, and provide practice for students to analyze, interpret, and construct a response to geometry and measurement tasks.

 

Instruct students on self-monitoring techniques to assess and improve their work.

 

Differentiate instruction and make accommodations based on students needs.

 

Provide “at risk” students with additional tutoring by a variety of  school personnel

Monitoring Progress with timelines and adjustments:

 

 At the end of each trimester:

 

The SIT, Principal, and  teachers will:

 

Review student work and reflect on progress, adjusting instruction as necessary.

 

Use findings from NECAP testing, classroom assessments, student work and teacher observations to monitor progress.

 

At Mid-Trimester:

 

Monitor the progress of “at risk” students towards benchmarks from Progress Monitoring Sheets

 

Use Progress Monitoring Sheets and intervention strategies to increase the number of students meeting proficiency by 3%  on the geometry and measurement GLE’s

 

Collaboration and Support: 

 

During Faculty Meetings, Professional Days, and Grade Level Meetings, teachers will:

 

Review student work to adjust instructional practices and strategies to ensure student progress.

 

Collaborate to share research-based practices and strategies that support the neediest of students.

 

 

Principal will meet with every grade level each trimester to review student work focused on math action steps to measure student progress towards result statement

Resources, School and District: 

 

Use Federal, State and Local funds as appropriate to:

 

Provide professional development in areas of geometry and measurement.

 

Provide release time for teachers to examine student work, review  progress and develop common tasks to increase rigor and consistency  and  to improve instructional practices

 

EMT district training for Developing Math Ideas

 

 

Evaluation of Success/Reporting to Families and Community:

 

The SIT, Principal, and teachers will analyze student success based on findings from:

 

An increase of 3% in the number of students meeting or exceeding proficiency on the Math NECAP.

 

A 3% increase of students reaching the benchmarks on Progress Monitoring Sheets
