A Message from the Principal, Dr. Christopher T. Lord
Congratulations! You have found Charles E. Shea Senior High School—one of the most diverse high schools in the nation. Shea currently has students from over 50 countries speaking over 25 different languages. A beacon of cultural diversity, the Shea High family has over 1000 students in a gorgeous building constructed during World War II. With somewhere between 200 and 300 students entering and leaving our school each year, we hope our message is carried far and wide: “I am the Wind, You are the Wings”
This message indicates the mutual support systems we share at Shea as we work together to meet our school’s goals.
Our students and teachers are working hard to meet the many requirements of education reform at the national, state and local level. For the last 5 years, per the No Child Left Behind Act, our state test scores have increased in all categories—some groups of students by more than 40%. Like all high schools in the State of Rhode Island, we are striving to meet the requirements of improving student literacy, implementing a performance based diploma system, and personalizing the school. All students who are reading below grade level have support in the form of longer, ramp up classes, special reading instruction or personal literacy plans. With so many students speaking so many different languages, this is our primary challenge. As of January 2008, our diploma system has met the initial requirements from the Rhode Island Department of Education. Students in the class of 2008 and beyond can expect to demonstrate proficiency in English and Mathematics in order to be granted their diploma. Our advisory program provides every student with an adult advocate to help plan for their future. The relationships our students establish with their teachers and with one another as we work toward these goals make Shea a very special place.
In addition, our students achieve award winning success in academic and co-curricular programs such as:
• The Certificate of Initial Mastery—a performance based diploma
• Work Based Learning Experience in the nation’s first high school American Government and Public Administration Academy.
• Key Club, National Honor Society, Hip Hop, and Drama
• A wide range of sports including football, basketball, tennis, and swimming
• Family Fun Day, Honors Night, Fashion Shows, Talent Shows, and much, much, more.
The Shea Alumni Association, Friends of Shea, and Family and Parent Support Group illustrate support for our students at events like Pot Luck Dinners, Open House and International Night. Feel free to discover why “Something Special is Happening Here” at Shea High School.
