Breaking Ground On New Pawtucket High School

Elected & Community Leaders Break Ground On New Pawtucket High School

$326 million Pawtucket High School will create a transformative new 375,000 sq ft learning space for 2,100 students.

PAWTUCKET, RI – This morning, elected and community leaders including Governor Dan McKee, Pawtucket Mayor Donald Grebien, House Speaker Joseph Shekarchi, Commissioner of Education Angélica Infante-Green, Pawtucket City Council members, Pawtucket Schools Acting Superintendent Randy Buck, and Pawtucket School Committee members came together for a ceremonial groundbreaking project for the new Pawtucket High School project on the site of the former McCoy Stadium. The $326 million project will create a transformative new 375,000 sq ft learning space for approximately 2,100 high school students. The project team includes owner’s project manager Colliers Project Leaders, construction manager Shawmut Design and Construction, and architect Jonathan Levi Architects.

“My administration is committed to partnering with local communities to create high-quality learning environments that foster innovation and support student success,” said Governor Dan McKee. “Together with other state-supported projects—like the new soccer stadium, train station, and housing developments such as Dexter Street Commons—this new school represents a vital investment in Pawtucket’s future: its people, its neighborhoods, and our local economy.”

“Today is a great day for the students of Pawtucket who deserve a modern, 21st century learning environment that prepares them for success,” said Pawtucket Mayor Donald Grebien. “McCoy Stadium holds a special place in the hearts of so many, filled with cherished memories of baseball games, concerts, and community events. While we honor and celebrate that rich history, we also move forward and focus on what’s next for our city. Today, we break ground on a state-of-the-art new high school that invests in our students, our families, and our entire community. This project will provide transformative opportunities for generations of Pawtucket Schools students to come, and we thank our residents for their support and patience as we embark on this exciting project.”

“The General Assembly was proud to pass legislation to invest in the new Pawtucket High School campus,” said House Speaker K. Joseph Shekarchi. “It is very fitting that the site of the former McCoy Stadium will be transformed into a state-of-the-art educational facility. Many of us remember when Ben Mondor revitalized the stadium, as well as the team that played here. Mr. Mondor was also an exceptional philanthropist who loved our state and gave back tremendously to create more opportunities for others. In fact, just before he passed away, Mr. Mondor and his wife Madeleine helped a local school move to a bigger facility so it could help even more students.  I think he’d be pleased that the site he loved will now be the home of Pawtucket’s modern, unified high school.”

“The groundbreaking of Pawtucket ‘s new high school marks a historic moment for a major investment that will allow more students to learn and thrive in a 21st century school,” said Commissioner Angélica Infante-Green. “The new unified school will offer cutting-edge tools and features that will enhance learning and engagement and empower students and teachers to succeed. RIDE is proud to be a partner on this project, and I look forward to returning for the grand opening and celebrating alongside members of the Pawtucket community.”

“Breaking ground on the new Pawtucket High School marks an exciting and transformative moment for our school district,” said Acting Pawtucket Schools Superintendent Randy Buck. “This project represents a bold investment in our students, our families, and the future of education in Pawtucket. McCoy Stadium holds a special place in our community’s history, filled with memories that will always be cherished. But soon, we will turn the page to a new chapter, one that ensures every student has access to a modern, innovative learning environment that prepares them for success in college, careers, and beyond. I’m honored to stand alongside our city leadership, school committee, and residents as we embark on this journey together. The work we do today will shape the future of Pawtucket for generations to come.”

“Entering the demolition phase of this project is bittersweet for many in Pawtucket, me included,” said Pawtucket City Council President Terrence Mercer. “I grew up a block from McCoy and the stadium was essentially the backdrop for my entire childhood. It even provided me with my very first job hawking popcorn and peanuts in the stands. But that’s the past, and this project is about the future, the future of Pawtucket, and the future of generations of students thirsty for knowledge and growth, and eager for the additional Career and Technical Education training that will assuredly make attainable the bright future we wish for them.”

“The demolition of McCoy Stadium signifies the end of an era in Pawtucket, but it also initiates a new chapter for our high school students who will attend a state-of-the-art facility designed to enhance their future and cultivate their potential,” said Omar Reyes, Pawtucket School Committee Chair and Joanne Bonollo, Deputy Chair. “We are committed to continuing McCoy Stadium’s legacy by establishing a school that will host our students’ aspirations, joy, and success, and by providing enhanced educational opportunities for the residents of our city. The construction of our new unified high school will serve as a beacon and symbol of collaboration between City Hall, the City Council, the School Committee, and, most importantly, the residents of Pawtucket.”

“As we start construction on the new Pawtucket High School, we do so with deep respect for the history of this site and a shared commitment to what lies ahead,” said Chris Maury, Head of Preconstruction, New England Region / Head of Rhode Island Operations at Shawmut Design and Construction. “McCoy Stadium has been a beloved part of this community for generations, and we recognize how much it has meant to so many. This next chapter builds on that legacy—a modern, forward-looking high school that will serve as a vibrant hub of learning and opportunity. We’re honored to help bring this vision to life and to deliver a space that meets the needs of today’s students and the future of Pawtucket.”

Completion of the new Pawtucket High School is anticipated in December 2028. Detailed information about the construction project and the features of the new Pawtucket High School can be found at psdri.net/pawtucket-high-school/.

Shea High School Athletes Visit the Basketball Hall of Fame

FAFSA Completion Night

Great turnout with 43 students and parents attending our FAFSA Completion Night! The FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) is important because it is the primary application used to determine eligibility for federal financial aid like grants, work-study, and loans, which means that completing it is crucial to access the largest pool of funding available for college tuition and other educational expenses; most states and colleges also use FAFSA information to award their own financial aid packages, making it a critical step for students seeking to pay for their education.
Thank you to @onwardwelearn, Upward Bound, and @RICNews for your partnership and support this evening.

Save the date: Next FAFSA Completion Night will be Tuesday, February 11th.

City of Pawtucket Announces 2024-2025 Winter Preparedness Plan

As winter weather approaches, the City of Pawtucket wants to ensure all residents are informed about snow and ice procedures. Please review the important details below to stay prepared and avoid fines during snow emergencies.

For immediate snow updates, we encourage you to follow and/or subscribe to these platforms:

  • Follow on Social Media:
  • Visit the City of Pawtucket website’s homepage: pawtucketri.gov.
  • Sign up for CodeRED: CodeRed is the City’s emergency alert platform where residents can subscribe to calls or texts for any storms or emergency-related issues.

Parking Bans

How do parking bans work?

  • Typically, an on-street parking ban is put into effect when two or more inches of snow are forecasted.
  • Once declared, all vehicles must be moved off the streets during the designated time.
  • Parking bans are announced on the city’s website, social media platforms, CodeRED alerts, and local radio and TV broadcasts.

Avoid fines and towing:

  • Vehicles left on the street during a parking ban will be towed at the owner’s expense or fined $100.
  • After the parking ban is lifted, vehicles must be removed from municipal parking areas within two hours or risk towing and a $100 fine.
  • It is vital that cars are moved into city lots, and then removed from city lots in a timely manner.
  • If cars are left on the street during a ban, this delays the Department of Public Works in their snow removal process, meaning it will take longer for our streets to be cleaned.
  • On the opposite end of the parking ban, it is crucial that cars are removed within the two hour period after lifting the parking ban. Most designated lots are school parking lots. If residents do not remove their car in a timely fashion, it can delay school re-openings.

Alternate parking locations:

  • During parking bans, municipal lots throughout the city are available for parking. Please review the full list of locations below.

Sidewalk Clearing

Responsibilities:

  • Property owners, occupants, or responsible individuals must clear snow and ice from sidewalks within the first 12 hours of daylight after a storm ends.

Fines:

  • The Zoning Department is diligent about issuing these fines as it poses a massive safety threat if sidewalks are not cleared.
  • First offense: $25. Additional fines may apply for repeated violations.
  • Fines are issued at the end of each snowstorm, not at the end of the season.

Senior Snow Shoveling Program

  • The snow shoveling program is currently at capacity, but seniors can join the waiting list. Contact Herb Weiss at hweiss@pawtucketri.gov or call the Senior Center at (401) 728-7582.
  • Seniors on the waiting list will have shoveling-related fines waived. However, we can not guarantee that removal will take place based on the length of the waitlist.

For youth volunteers:

  • Local youth interested in helping shovel snow for seniors can sign up here.

School Cancellations

The Pawtucket School Department uses its own messaging system to communicate directly with parents about school-related updates, including cancellations, delays, and early dismissals. If you are not currently receiving these updates, we encourage you to contact your child’s school to ensure your contact information is up to date.

These updates will also be included in the City’s general messaging, but for the most timely and accurate information, we recommend following the School Department’s platform.

JA Inspire Career Exploration Fair

Very proud of our CTE students who are manning booths and showcasing the districts CTE pathways at this week’s JA Inspire Career Exploration Fair at the RI Convention Center! This in-person career exploration fair for 8th grade students will include opportunities from local businesses, non-profits, government agencies, and educational organizations. This fair introduces Rhode Island’s students to our state’s high-wage/high-demand industries. Each booth may highlight career paths, education requirements, and salary ranges for some of the high demand careers that await our students.

Shea Soccer Team Championship Celebration

Champions! Thank you to the Mayor’s Office for celebrating our Shea Boys Soccer team on their Division II Championship! It was great to recognize this stellar group of student athletes and their families last night!

PSD and RentRelief RI

The Pawtucket School Department, in collaboration with RI Housing, is hosting weekly RentReliefRI office hours at the PSD Administration Building on Wednesdays from 9-3:30pm.

RentReliefRI is a statewide rental assistance program administered by RIHousing, the program provides rental and utility assistance to eligible Rhode Island households. Renters who are struggling to pay their rent or utilities as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic may qualify for a total of 18 months of assistance. The program can pay for rent and utilities owed back to April 1, 2020 and can also cover up to three months of upcoming rent. Renters may apply for help with paying for utilities even if they do not need help paying for rent.

Norma Robles, staff from Family Service of RI, is a contracted RentRelifRI specialist, available to help PSD families determine eligibility and complete the application during Wednesday office hours at the school department administration building.  Families can call (401) 699-6359, email RoblesNo@familyserviceri.org or stop in to find out more information.
