Walk A Thon

Dear Parents and Friends of Varieur School,

Varieur Elementary School will be holding a schoolwide Walk-A-Thon on Friday, June 9 in order to raise funds to purchase Accelerated Reader, point club ribbons, and books for the book vending machine. All children and staff will walk at Max Reid Field from 9:30-11:15. We are asking families to participate by asking for donations towards the walking our students will do during the event. As a reminder, students should not go door to door without adult supervision…we are encouraging you to ask family, friends and coworkers!

Please complete the attached pledge sheet and return it no later than Wednesday, June 7 in order for us to organize prizes! These prizes will be awarded Friday, June 9 after our event. Prizes will be awarded based on the total dollar amount they turn in. The prize structure is on the back of the pledge form.

We look forward to a morning of walking, fun and schoolwide collaboration in order to ensure Accelerated Reader continues to be a successful tool for creating lifelong readers at Varieur Elementary. We appreciate your continued support of our Varieur Viking students.

Newsletter- May and June, 2023

Dear Varieur Families,

I hope you are all doing very well and staying healthy.  The warmer days are finally upon us and the children are excited that summer is almost here.  This newsletter is a combined newsletter for the months of May and June.

Grades three through five students did a great job with the ELA portion of RICAS testing.  We will continue with the Math portion of RICAS testing the week of  May 16th – May 19th.  Again, please make sure your child gets to school on time and gets a good night’s sleep.

Fun days and nights will be happening here at Varieur the next two months. Please see all the dates below.  Flyers for some of these night events will be going home in the next few days and weeks.

May 18th Empowerment Factory

May 25th Grades 3-5 Field trip to the Vets Auditorium

June 20th Kindergarten Graduation – reminders were sent home, invitations to follow in the coming weeks.

June 21st last day of school

Our teachers have prepared an exciting and engaging summer-learning packet for all students in grades K-4 so they stay sharp with their skills during the summer months.  This packet will be sent home with the children by the end of the year.  Be on the lookout for that.  This completed packet should be brought back to school by all students at the start of the 2023-2024 school year and be given to their new classroom teacher.  Please have your children read at least 20 to 30 minutes a night as this will help them continue to build strong reading skills.

As we begin to think about transitioning into next year, please understand that I receive many emails requesting certain teachers. I will try my best, but please understand that many factors

go into why children are assigned to certain teachers’ classrooms. Among some of the reasons are teacher certifications, staffing/retirement, students’ needs, etc. Please know that our teaching staff work together to provide the best and most optimal learning experience for all students.

I want to thank you all for a wonderful school year.  I appreciate your support in educating your child and I hope you have a wonderful summer.

Ms. Boucher

RICAS

When will my child take the RICAS? ELA testing will be the week of April 17th – April 21st.

Math testing will be the week of May 15th to May 19th.

       ELA Testing

  • Grade 3 April 18th and April 20th
  • Grade 4 April 19th and April 21st
  • Grade 5 April 19th and April 21st

      Math Testing

  • Grade 3 May 16th and May 18th
  • Grade 4 May 17th and May 19th
  • Grade 5 May 17th and Math 19th

What is RICAS? The Rhode Island Comprehensive Assessment System (RICAS) is a high-quality assessment that fulfills federal requirements for annual assessments in English Language Arts (ELA) and mathematics for students in grades 3-8.

Why is it important ? RICAS gives teachers, students, and families information about student progress, school performance, and how to improve teaching.

How will I know how my child performed on the 2023 RICAS assessment? In the fall, families will receive a detailed performance report.

How long are RICAS assessments? The ELA assessment is two sessions that last 120-150 minutes.  The math assessment is two sessions that last 90-120  minutes.  All students will have extended time if needed.

What types of questions will my child be asked? Students will answer different types of questions to measure understanding in ELA and mathematics, including multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank, “technology enhanced” questions like drag-and-drop, and written responses.  You can view RICAS practice tests at RICAS.peasronsupport.com

March Newsletter

Dear Varieur Families,

I cannot believe it is already March.  Time is really flying and the students here at Varieur are really  growing.   I see it every day when I visit classrooms, or when I sit and read or even work in small groups with the  children.  Students have been earning many ribbons for AR and different prizes for iReady as well.  They are all working very hard.  Please continue to have your child read 20 to 30 minutes a night.

The Audubon Society  visited the third graders right before vacation.   Please be sure to follow my Twitter page to see pictures. (@bouchervarieur)  They learned a great deal about owls and will be taking a trip to the Audubon Society in May.

I want to thank the 50 families that have completed the Surveyworks survey.  There is more time to complete the survey if you would like to.  (bit.ly/ridefamily) This is important as we need to hear from families so as to make the improvements to best serve our students and community.

Flyers went home this week in regards to Bingo night.  Please save the date; it is Thursday, March 16, 2023 from 5:30 to 7:00 in our cafeteria.  Bingo books are on sale now for $5.00.

Next week is our kick off to reading month.  We are having a Spirit Week to kick it off.  Flyers were sent home yesterday.

RICAS ramp up starts next week for grades 3-5.  Please email your child’s teacher for more information. Permission slips went home this past week.

We are preparing our  3-5 graders who will be taking the RICAS test starting with the ELA portion the week of April 17-20,2023.    The math portion of the RICAS will be taking place the week of May 15-19, 2023.

Parent teacher conferences will be held on March 30th.  There is no school for students that day.

There will also be no school for  children on March 31st as it is a PD day for teachers.

I want to take a minute to  thank the parents who have come to volunteer in the classrooms whether it be putting new furniture together, helping children take an AR test, or simply working in the library with them.  I also want to thank the parents who helped at Craft Night. It is greatly appreciated.

Please try to attend our next Friends of Varieur  meeting on March 14, 2023 in the library at 5:30.

Ms. Boucher

SurveyWorks

Varieur Families,

Each year the Rhode Island Department of Education conducts a survey of parents/guardians, educators and students (grades 3-12) to get their input as to how they think things are going within their school. This data then provides administrators and educators with feedback to impact classroom and school improvement.

This year we will be administering this survey for parents/guardians from January 17, 2023 through  March 31, 2023.  This year for families the questions will cover topics such as school safety, climate, family support and encouragement.

We encourage you to participate and give your feedback about Varieur so we can continue to give our students and families the very best of what you need. Please click on the link below to complete this year’s survey. In the “Select” box, begin typing Varieur Elementary School and you will be directed to our survey.

Newsletter–January, 2023

Dear Varieur Families,

I hope you had a wonderful holiday with your family and friends.  The time is flying by and the children are all growing so quickly.  Please continue to have your children work hard and read nightly at home.   This helps your child in so many ways.

The children had a busy week before they left for the  holiday vacation.  The Hasbro elves came and the children enjoyed the Global Day of Joy.  The elves went around the school handing out a toy to each child in every classroom. The children were so excited and also shared what the Global Day of Joy meant to them.

Students who earned AR trimester rewards also enjoyed winter bingo and a hot cocoa bar.  Fun was had by everyone. Can’t wait to see how we celebrate next trimester.

I want to say how proud I am of the third, fourth and fifth grade students who performed in our holiday concert.  It was great to see the students and families enjoy the concert.

This is a reminder to please make sure you are picking your children up in the Max Read parking lot. The front of the school is for buses only.  I want all the children to be safe here at Varieur so please never pass a bus when the stop sign is out and again, please pick up and drop off your children at Max Read field lot.

Friends of Varieur will meet on Tuesday, January 24th at 6:00 in the media center at Varieur.  We will be discussing monthly events and volunteers needed for those events.

Report cards will be going home on Friday, February 3, 2023.  Please be on the lookout for those.  Please make sure your child has all their work in to their teachers before January 26, 2023.

Regarding absences:  Please make sure you call your child in as absent on each day he/she will be out.  It is imperative you’re in contact with your child’s teacher in order for us to be able to send work home if we need to.

It is also important to get your child to school on time. Many children have been coming into school at 9:10 or later. It is so important for the children to start their day on time in their classroom with  their teacher and their peers.

There is No School on Monday, January 16th due to Martin Luther King day .

December Newsletter

Francis J. Varieur Elementary School

Newsletter – December,  2022

Dear Varieur Families,

I hope all of you had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday with your family and friends.  Time is flying by and we are already half way through our marking period.  Parent teacher conferences are Thursday, December 15, 2022.   Appointment letters will be going home this week  with your child.   Please make this a priority as it is important that you know how your child is doing so far this year.

I want to thank all the families and teachers for making our Bingo night such a great success.  We had over 250 people attend.  It was great seeing everyone have fun and enjoy themselves.

Over the summer our library got a makeover.  I am sure the children have gone home and talked about it.  It has been renovated and looks amazing .  They are still putting finishing touches on it, but please make sure to take a peek and walk through on Parent teacher conference day.

December is a very busy month for us here at Varieur.  December 7th is Hasbro Day of Joy.  The children get very excited to receive a toy from  the Hasbro elves.  It is a  fun day for all.   December 8th is when the Empowerment Factory will be here from 6-8.  Flyers went home this week.  Please make sure to sign up as there are only twenty spots available. Sign up using the QR code on the Empowered Factory sheet .

Parent teachers conferences are December 15,2022 and there is no school for  the children.   There is no school on December 16,2002 as that is a Professional Day for teachers.

This is a reminder that it is imperative that your child comes to school on time.   School begins at 9:00AM.  Our  tardy rates are very high at Varieur.  When your child is late to school it disrupts the start of their day.

We have a new communication board outside the building where the children line up. Important event dates will be posted there so please be on the lookout for upcoming fun events.

A reminder that our school store runs every Friday. The smencils are still $1.00.  The  money we make from our school store and Bingo go toward new books for our book machine, AR award ribbons and other items the children ask for.

Speaking of AR.  The children are reading like crazy.  Every Tuesday I call children to the main office after reading their names over the intercom.  Last Tuesday I read over 34 names and children received ribbons.  We are very proud of them.

Please check out my twitter page as I have posted several pictures of our Students of the month  as well.  @bouchervarieur

Our winter recess is December 23, 2022- January 2, 2023.

I would like to wish you and your family a very special holiday and Happy New Year!

Be Well and Be Safe .

November Newsletter

Francis J. Varieur

Newsletter–November, 2022

Dear Varieur Families,

I hope this newsletter finds you and your family healthy and well. The school year is going by so quickly and the children are really flourishing.  They are working hard and learning so many new things.  It was wonderful seeing so many of you at Trunk or Treat.  The teachers and I love doing this for the children.

So many children have been doing well with  their nightly reading.  Please continue to have the children read nightly.  Many have earned AR ribbons over the last several weeks.  It is so wonderful to see the children have their names called over the intercom and then come to receive their ribbon.

We celebrated Red Ribbon Week this past week.  Twelve students represented Varieur at Tolman at the Red Ribbon Rally and we are so proud of them. We also had a door decoration contest where children helped their teachers decorate  their classroom door.  What an amazing job everyone did. Mrs. Kissinger’s class came in first place.  Mrs. Dufault’s class came in second place and Mrs. Rivellis’ class came in third place.  Those classes will have a pizza party, however, everyone worked so hard they received a treat from me and Mr. Diko on Monday at lunch.

If your child needs to leave early, please send a note in with your child.  That note should be given to your child’s teacher.  It is very difficult to dismiss children at 3:00 when we are getting children ready for COZ and bus dismissal.  So, please try to avoid that time.   Please remember that children need to be picked up by 3:10 as that is our dismissal time.  If you are going to be late, please call the  school.  You must understand that teachers have meetings to attend, run after school programs etc. so there is no staff to watch the children after school hours..

We will be hosting a Fall Bingo Night on Thursday, November 17th from 6:00-7:30 in the cafeteria.  We have some really great prizes and hope you will be able to join us.  It is so much fun!  More information will be going home next week.

It is  that time of year again where we will be collecting food items and making Thanksgiving Baskets for those families in need. We are asking that families that can help, to please donate the following:

Kindergarten Gravy (turkey, chicken, beef), Assorted Soups
1st Grade Can Goods: Canned vegetables, Canned fruit, Cranberry Sauce
2nd Grade Boxed Goods:  Mashed Potatoes, Stuffing, Rice, Pasta
3rd Grade Desserts:  Cake Mixes, Boxed Bread/Muffin Mixes, Brownie Mixes, Pudding / Jell-o Boxes
4th Grade Drinks:  Assorted Fruit Juices, Coffee, Tea, Bottled Water etc.
5th Grade Aluminum Foil, Assorted Sizes of Aluminum Pans (turkey, bread, casserole, cake) etc.

The following days below are days we do not have school.

Tuesday November 8th -Election day

Friday November 11th –  Veterans Day

Wednesday November 23rd -25th Thanksgiving Recess

In the next several weeks be on the lookout for the parent  teacher conferences appointment sheet.  Our parent teacher conferences this year are December 15th.  More information to follow soon.

I would personally like to wish all of you a very Happy Thanksgiving!

Sincerely,

Ms. Boucher  M. Ed

October Newsletter

Pumpkin

Dear Varieur Families,

I hope this letter finds you and your family well. The children are all off to a great start as they settle into the new school year.  September has come and gone and we are already into the cooler days of October.  There are many exciting things happening at Varieur this month.

In the month of September, students completed their Iready diagnostic testing.  This now gives the teachers a better look at where your child is academically and what they need to do for your child’s individual growth.  Please email  your child’s teacher if you would like more information regarding how well they did and what you can do at home to help strengthen their skills.

We are off to a great start for our AR this year.  As of this past week as a school, we read 1,087 books so far.  The children are very excited to be back earning those point club ribbons.  We call children down every Tuesday morning  to receive their ribbons.

Smencils are back.  The children are so excited!  We sell them Friday mornings for $1.00.

Chromebook distribution will be next Wednesday, October 12, 2022 from 5-7 in the cafeteria.

You will enter through door 11 – the Max Read side of the school.  Please make sure you have your Chromebook User Agreement Contract signed and ready when you come to pick up your child’s computer.  These were sent home this week.  Students and parents must attend this event in order to receive a Chromebook.

We are going to have our second Trick or Trunk this year.  Last year we had such a wonderful time, we will be holding another one on Friday, October 21, 2023 from 5:30-7PM.  It will be held in the front of the school just like last year.  We will be selling glow sticks and smencils that night for $1.00.  Parents please park in the Max Read parking lot.  Be on the lookout for the flyer for this fun event.

Varieur has collapsed their PTA and will be looking to form a PTO.  We’re actively looking for a president, vice president,  treasurer, and secretary.  Please call the school or email me if you are interested.   My email is boucherb@psdri.net.

This is a reminder there is no school on Monday, October 10, 2022 due to Columbus Day.

Picture day is November 4, 2022.  We will be sending flyers home in the next several weeks with the different packages you can purchase.

Stay safe and be well.
