“Get Food Smart RI” is a program by the RI Schools Recycling Project that aims to reduce food waste in Rhode Island schools by having students sort food, set up “share tables” for edible food, and compost food scraps. The program teaches students about waste reduction and food insecurity while empowering them to take leadership roles in implementing these changes within their schools.
Program goals and activities
- Reduce and divert food waste: The primary goal is to divert all lunchroom food waste from landfills through composting or other methods.
- Recover and redistribute food: Edible, unopened food from the “share table” is recovered and redistributed to students and families who are food insecure.
- Prevent food waste: The program also works to reduce the amount of food waste created in the first place through various strategies.
- Educate students: Students, known as “Cafeteria Rangers,” are trained to monitor sorting stations and teach their peers about the program’s goals.
