Agnes Little Elementary is the first school in Pawtucket to partner with the RI School Recycling Project’s (RISRP) Get Food Smart Program to reduce the amount of waste going into the landfill, teach students about recycling and composting and rescuing fresh healthy food to provide to local families in need. This program is led and ran daily by our own Agnes little student rangers.
Before the Get Food Smart Program, the average weight of trash from Agnes Little lunches going to the landfill was 98 pounds per day. After sorting the waste, the average weight of trash going to the landfill from Agnes Little is 11 pounds per day. Agnes Little students reduce the amount of trash going to the landfill by 87 pounds in one day. That is a decrease of 89% of daily trash. At this rate the school will divert 7 tons of food waste away from the landfill during this school year.
