Special Education (ESY)
ESY stands for Extended School Year, which is a term used in the field of special education. ESY services are provided to students with disabilities beyond the regular school year to prevent regression of skills and to help maintain the progress they have made.
Qualifying for ESY services is determined on an individual basis, as part of the student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP). In order to qualify for ESY services, a student must typically demonstrate that they are at risk of significant regression of critical skills during breaks from school (such as summer vacation) that would impede their ability to make progress once school resumes.
Factors that may be considered when determining ESY eligibility include:
- Regression: The likelihood that the student will lose critical skills or knowledge during an extended break from instruction.
- Recoupment: The time it would take for the student to regain those lost skills once school resumes.
- Emerging skills: The importance of continuing instruction during breaks to support the development of emerging skills.
- Critical life skills: The impact of a break from instruction on the student’s ability to maintain critical life skills.
The decision to provide ESY services is made by the student’s IEP team, which typically includes parents, educators, and other relevant professionals. It is important for parents to work closely with the school to advocate for their child’s needs and to ensure that appropriate ESY services are provided if necessary.
The Pawtucket School Department offers several ESY programs to meet the needs of our students. In addition, two summer evaluation teams work throughout the summer to meet IDEA child find requirements.
